Summary
Yusuke and Hiei's relationship develops without spoken words. They
aren't really needed, and are completely pointless at this point.
Notes
This is my first attempt at a YuYu Hakusho fic, and I have only
watched the anime (English Dub), so please bear with me. I hope to
write more of them in the future, however, and I hope you enjoy this
one! Please let me know through comments what you think. I greatly
appreciate any and all feedback. Thank you, and enjoy!
It had probably all started during Maze Castle. Hiei could have easily betrayed
them and let the weight of the falling ceiling crush them, but the prospect of
fighting Yusuke again held him back. The fact that Yusuke was trusting him-the
demon who had captured his closest childhood friend-to save them puzzled him to
no end. After the Gates of Betrayal, it was obvious to Hiei that the spirit
detective's trust in him had grown. That fact stroked the fire demon's ego
greatly. He would be so easy to betray, but not so easily manipulated. However,
something told Hiei that he wouldn't be doing that. Perhaps it was the fire he
saw in the human's boring brown eyes, or the respect he had for him as a
fighter. Or maybe it was how he heard the human's heart speed up when he was
near, and it certainly wasn't from fear. It was something else.
There was just something about the short demon that intrigued Yusuke to no end.
He hadn't really noticed it until he and Kurama had joined him and Kuwabara on
their mission to take down the Saint Beasts. The way he moved in battle was
mezmerizing. He remembered having that power focused solely on him during their
fight and found himself itching for it again when they were reunited. But they
had other things to attend to, and there was no time for a rematch.
He found himself glancing at Hiei more times than was necissary, or probably
healthy, during their mission. And when it came time for the swordsman to fight
he was overly excited. The fight with Seiryu was over quickly, and Yusuke
struggled to keep up with Hiei's quick and precise movements. Warmth slithered
down his spine despite the cold of the room as the fight came to a close as his
eyes locked with Hiei's for just a moment. His breath caught in his throat and
his body hummed with an excess amount of anticipation.
It was in that moment that he knew for sure. He was attracted to Hiei, and
there was no denying it. At least not to himself. But it was never spoken
aloud.
The mission continued and eventually Suzaku was defeated, and they were
victorious. Everything seemed to go back to normal until their next mission.
Hiei's sister was in danger, but they seemed to be victorious yet again. And
they were...to a point.
Between night terrors about the younger Toguro and his arduous training under
Genkai, Yusuke didn't really have time for anything else. The Dark Tournament
loomed over them all, and they had to be ready.
During his training with Kurama and Kuwabara, Hiei often found his mind
wandering to Yusuke and how his training was going. Was he getting faster? How
strong would he be when they met again? He would have to test him. He had to
know. Their rematch had been delayed for far too long and Hiei craved it like
an addict. Thankfully, he wasn't the only one.
As soon as he and Yusuke saw each other before boarding the boat to Hanging
Neck Island, the fight began. Nothing existed outside of them. Yusuke's speed
had improved and so had his strength. Hiei could feel the strength of his
spirit energy rippling beneath his skin, barely contained. It made his mouth
water and a small smirk to grace his lips.
Barely a few seconds into the fight and Hiei began to smell arousal on the
human and he had to suppress a laugh. So...this excited Yusuke as much as it
did him. Now that was enticing. He could've fought with him all day and seen
where it led, how far they could push each other until exhaustion took them. Or
maybe... Hiei banished the thoughts and ended the fight. Now he'd had a taste
and could hardly wait to see just how much the boy had grown.
As Yusuke slept his dreams wavered between training regimes at Genkai's estate
and running through shifting woods, chasing...someone. He couldn't see who it
was in the darkness that would surround him. The chase always took place at
night, and the figure that he chased was always a blurred black shadow in the
distance. But he could always hear their voice.
"You'll have to move faster than that if you're ever going to catch me," The
voice taunted, echoing in his ears as though spoken directly beside him. "Come
on. Is that really all you're capable of? I expected better from Spirit World's
chosen one." The voice mocked him, teased him, spurred him on. He pushed
himself to run faster and faster until his heart was thrumming in his ears and
his feet hardly touched the ground when he stepped. Sweat dripped down his neck
and under his collar uncomfortably, but he kept going.
He closed in on the figure, grinning in triumph. He reached out to grab them
and they disappeared. He skidded to a stop and spun in circles, trying to find
them. His chest heaved with every breath and his heart hammered against his
ribs. Adrenaline coursed through his veins and the hair at the back of his neck
rose as he felt eyes on him. He felt as though he knew the eyes boring into
him, but for some reason the name escaped him, just as the owner easily slipped
from him every time.
"Over here," The voice finally chimed, coming from all around him. Yusuke spun
again, trying to find them. He was growing frustrated. "Has Genkai taught you
nothing, or were you too pigheaded to listen? I'm right here." Yusuke ground
his teeth together and growled, his frustration growing into anger. He turned
again, finally spotting the set of red eyes staring down at him from one of the
trees. Yusuke grinned and charged at the tree.
The figure jumped from the branch and took off in a different direction than
before, beckoning Yusuke to follow them. With a laugh, he took off after them.
For the second time he nearly caught them and as he reached out to catch them
he found himself balancing on a his finger above a spike with Genkai.
And so the dreams went on in their continuous cycle. Sometimes, he would catch
the figure and they would clash, but he always moved too quickly for him to
see. He only caught glimpses of familiar red eyes. It wasn't until he truly
caught the other that he realized it was Hiei. And then he woke up.
As the Dark Tournament went on Yusuke continued to train himself, as did the
others. He worried about Hiei's arm, but knew that the demon would bounce back
soon. He was far too resilient to let something like that keep him restrained.
The spirit detective balanced on one hand and took a deep breath before pushing
up onto his index finger, using his energy to try and stay balanced. His hair
fell into his eyes, the gel he normally used to keep it slicked back had
partially washed out due to sweat.
He blinked said sweat from his eyes and suddenly there was a pair of black
boots in his vision. He hadn't heard anyone approach and it caught him off
guard. He quickly lowered onto his hand and pushed off the ground, going
backwards and landing upright in a squatted sitting position. Hiei stood in
front of him. The demon looked as stoic as ever, his right arm bandaged up, the
Jagan open and uncovered, and his shirt was missing. He'd probably just come
from his own private training.
Yusuke was about to say something, probably a snarky comment about his silent
approach when their eyes locked. Hiei's red bore into Yusuke's brown,
effectively silencing him. The human's heart raced as though he'd been running
for hours, and his skin felt heated and tight. His throat went dry and he stood
slowly. Hiei's gaze reminded him of a predator eyeing its prey. It was intense
and frightening and excited.
Hiei dropped into a fighting stance and Yusuke followed suit. They charged at
each other, and began throwing punches back and forth. Dodging and countering,
circling at breakneck speeds. It was rare for Hiei to use hand-to-hand combat,
but Yusuke didn't question it. Somehow, it felt right; intimate.
The world stopped around them in that moment. There was nothing, no tournament,
no life-threatening fights, no spirit world duties, nothing at all. Just them.
They pushed at each other's physical limits, matching blow for blow. Everything
around them was a blur, their focus only on each other. Yusuke's heart still
pounded in his chest, thrummed in his ears and he knew that Hiei could hear it.
And the demon was reveling in it.
His pride swelled at the fact that he was making the human's heart race just as
quickly as they were. He'd watched Yusuke's other fights and knew that no other
opponent had made his pulse quicken this much. The human's scent was tinged
with heavy arousal and spiked with adrenaline so thick he could taste it. No
one else but him could do that to Yusuke, and he took great pleasure in that
fact. It confirmed something to him that he'd been pondering since their short
spar before the tournament.
Yusuke moved in for a right hook and Hiei dodged easily, ducking and moving
swiftly behind him. As the taller boy spun to meet him he swept his leg at his
feet, knocking him off balance and sending him sprawling backwards. Hiei
followed after and pinned him to the ground, straddling his waist and holding
his wrists above his head in an iron grip. Yusuke grunted at the impact and
stared up at Hiei, chest heaving.
The corner of Hiei's lips quirked up slightly in a smirk. Yusuke made no move
to throw him off. The fire apparition's crimson eyes were practically ablaze.
The human below him trembled, but it wasn't from fear. No, it was anticipation.
Hiei slowly let his gaze wander over Yusuke's sweat drenched body and knew that
this was his for the taking. He knew that this human-a warrior on par with him-
would willingly be devoured by him. And Hiei wasn't one to resist a temptation
as mouth-watering as that.
He leaned down and Yusuke's lips parted in a soft gasp just before Hiei's
captured them. The kiss was searing and deep and mind numbing, not like the
ones that he and Keiko had shared as kids before he found out he preferred boys
to girls. He pressed up into it, pulling at his wrists in Hiei's grasp and
moaning with what could only be called desperation. Hiei bit at Yusuke's tongue
and lips as he pulled back, blood welling where his fangs at caught. He licked
the small blood drops from the human's lips and turned his attention to his
throat.
Yusuke gasped louder this time, his back arching as Hiei dragged his sharp
teeth across his pulse point. The demon growled in satisfaction when he felt it
jump and flutter under his tongue. His mouth traveled down his throat to that
tender area where his neck met his shoulder and bit down. Yusuke cried out and
his back bent, pressing up into Hiei. His hands clenched and struggled to find
something to grasp. Hiei took pity on him and shifted so that his hands gripped
Yusuke's own instead of his wrists.
Hiei let go and licked at the blood before pulling back. He looked down at the
bite mark and smirked in satisfaction. It was deep and would certainly scar
over. His eyes flickered up to Yusuke's and found that the detective's pupils
were blown wide and his breath was coming in short puffs. Hiei chuckled darkly.
It was a delicious sight to behold.
Yusuke looked up at Hiei and shivered. The predatory look in the demon's eyes
had only become more prominent now. The bite on his shoulder burned
exquisitely. He licked his lips and leaned up, capturing Hiei in a sloppy kiss.
The shorter groaned quietly and let go of Yusuke's hands in favor of trailing
his own down the human's torso. Yusuke's hands instantly went to Hiei's hair,
tangling in the soft black locks. Hiei pinched Yusuke's nipples harshly through
his shirt, causing him to gasp and break the kiss.
Hiei grabbed the front of Yusuke's shirt and yanked him back into the kiss,
swallowing the resulting moan. He felt the shirt start to rip in his grasp and
yanked downwards, effectively destroying the article of clothing. He pulled the
remains off of Yusuke and let his hands wander across his flesh. He pushed
Yusuke back to the ground and shifted downwards, placing himself between the
human's legs. He lowered, keeping his eyes locked with Yusuke's as he flicked
his tongue over one of his hardened nipples. The human's hands, which remained
tangled in his hair, tightened their grip slightly.
It was like a dream, but far too vivid and intense to be anything but real.
Yusuke had never thought that anything like this would happen, but here he was,
slowly being devoured by the very being that had taunted him in dreams and
reality. Every flick of Hiei's tongue, graze of his lips, sharp nip of his
teeth, stroke of his hands, and press of his body against him felt like fire.
He was being slowly consumed and it wasn't enough. His hands dragged through
Hiei's hair and down to his shoulders and back, letting them wander and feel
all that he could.
Hiei continued his ministrations, moving slowly down Yusuke's body and dragging
every sound he could out of him. The human was already writhing and moaning
beneath him. If there was anyone around they would surely hear, but he couldn't
bring himself to care. His hands trailed up Yusuke's clothed legs towards the
fastenings of his pants. He kissed and nibbled at the skin just below his naval
as he tugged the pants down his legs. Yusuke lifted his hips to help with the
process. His shoes and socks ended up coming off with them and he was left
naked under Hiei's gaze.
The sight of Yusuke bare and sweating in the grass was certainly one to admire,
and Hiei did. He sat back on his knees, his hands idly petting his spread legs
as he drank in his appearance. It slowly dawned on him that this would be the
human's first time and it thrilled him to no end. He would ruin this boy. Make
him crave his touch. Make it so that only he could satisfy him.
Yusuke reached for him, a soft whimper leaving him when Hiei pulled just out of
reach. The demon chuckled softly and leaned over him, staring down at him.
Yusuke gripped his arms, hands trembling just as badly as the rest of him. Hiei
kissed him again, slowly devouring his mouth. His hand moved between his legs
and gripped the human's erection, slowly stroking him. Yusuke bucked into his
grip and he snickered softly, breaking off the kiss.
"Hiei," Yusuke breathed his name like a plea to the gods and it set his blood
aflame. The boy was his. He had been since long before, but only now was he
officially staking his claim. Hiei kissed him again and Yusuke's arms wound
around him tightly, clinging to him and kissing him back like he needed it more
than air. They parted and Hiei moved down Yusuke's body again. He looked up at
him from between his spread legs with a smirk before he dragged his tongue up
the underside of his cock. Yusuke moaned loudly and threw his head back, his
hands shooting out to grip Hiei's hair again.
Hiei chuckled before he took Yusuke fully into his mouth, sucking and rubbing
at his engorged flesh with his tongue. The fire demon's mouth was so hot it
burned and Yusuke was reduced to a writhing puddle of moans and cut-off curses.
His grip on Hiei's hair was tight and he was sure it hurt, but Hiei made no
move to remove his hands. The demon continued his torture for a while before he
pulled off and gripped the boy's legs, pushing them up so that his knees
touched his chest.
Yusuke looked down at Hiei, his eyes clouded and pupils blown so wide there was
hardly any of the chocolate brown irises left. The apparition dipped lower and
flicked his tongue against his puckered hole, making him gasp in surprise.
Before he could voice any half-hearted protests, Hiei pressed the flat of his
tongue against his entrance and slowly licked upwards towards his balls, making
him moan and his head dropped back down to the ground. His hands slipped from
Hiei's hair and instead gripped at the grass beneath him. Hiei continued to
tease the hole with his tongue until he could push it inside, making Yusuke cry
out and his body to jolt. Hiei fucked him with his tongue slowly until it was
dripping with his saliva.
When he pulled back, Yusuke was flushed and panting hard, his cock leaking
precum onto his stomach. Hiei took the young detective's cock into his mouth
and slowly pushed a finger inside of his loosened hole. He rubbed at his walls
and bobbed his head, hollowing out his cheeks as he sucked. He turned his
finger slightly and pushed a second inside. The burn of the stretch made Yusuke
grimace slightly, but it quickly melted away when Hiei found his prostate. The
reaction was instantaneous. Yusuke's back arched harshly and his hands tore at
the grass. His eyes shot open and he came hard down Hiei's throat, his hole
convulsing around his fingers.
Hiei swallowed the boy's salty cum and pulled off of him, carefully extracting
his fingers from him. Yusuke whimpered at the loss and reached out for him.
Hiei lowered the detective's legs and moved up his body, kissing him deeply.
His own need pressed against Yusuke's stomach, but he ignored it for now,
letting the human catch his breath before continuing. He teased him as he
waited, playing with his nipples and running his fingers over his cock and the
sensitive skin at the creases between his legs and hips.
The teasing easily brought back Yusuke's previous vigor and he pressed up
against Hiei needily. The demon snickered softly and nibbled at the bite mark
he'd left, drawing fresh blood. He pulled back and moved down his body again,
sitting on his knees between his legs. He placed his fingers at Yusuke's lips
and slowly pushed them into his mouth, making him suck on them. Yusuke watched
him as he did, enjoying the way the demon sucked in his breath and his nostrils
flared.
Hiei pulled his fingers from Yusuke's mouth and trailed them down his torso,
teasing his now fully erect cock when he reached it, and then his balls before
he slowly pushed two digits back into his hole. Yusuke moaned and pushed his
hips down against his fingers eagerly. The demon above him turned his head and
nibbled lightly on the inside of his thigh, dragging his lips down as his
fingers stretched him open. Hiei flicked his tongue against the stretched
entrance and pushed it inside along side his fingers when they scissored.
Yusuke thrashed and moaned, overwhelmed by the sensation.
A third finger joined the other two as Hiei pulled his tongue free and moved
his mouth to Yusuke's balls, sucking and licking them and his shaft in turn.
Yusuke gripped Hiei's hair and whined with need. He wanted more, and it was
obvious by the way that he pushed against Hiei's fingers as they fucked him and
stroked at his prostate.
"Hiei...please," He begged, his voice cracking slightly. Hiei pulled his mouth
from his cock and looked up at him. Yusuke looked down at him, his eyes
pleading. "Please," He whispered again, need lacing that one word so strongly
it was palpable in the air around them. Hiei pulled his fingers from Yusuke's
ass and made quick work of the belts on his pants, pushing them down far enough
to free his cock from their confines. He shifted closer and hooked Yusuke's
legs over his shoulders. He spat into his palm and used the saliva as lube.
He looked down at the boy and caught his gaze before he slowly pushed into him.
He groaned at the tight heat, his hands gripping Yusuke's thighs hard enough to
leave bruises. Yusuke cried out, but it tapered off into a long moan and his
eyes rolled up into his skull as he began to tremble once more. When Hiei was
fully seated inside him he remained still, catching his breath and reigning in
his control. He opened his eyes, unsure when they closed, and looked down at
Yusuke to find the boy's eyes screwed shut and his mouth open, lips quivering.
"Yusuke. Look at me," He commanded, his voice quiet and authoritative. Yusuke
opened his eyes and looked up at Hiei. The demon slowly pulled out and snapped
his hips forward, thrusting back into him and hitting his prostate. Yusuke
cried out and his back arched, his eyes shutting again. 'You're mine,' He heard
Hiei's voice in his head, the statement flooding his body with a white hot fire
that ripped through him and made him scream. 'You belong to me, Yusuke
Urameshi.' The words were only amplified by the pace Hiei had fallen into. It
was hard and slow, gradually picking up speed.
Yusuke reached for him and Hiei dropped the boy's legs, letting them fall to
his sides and wrap around him as he lowered towards him. The detective wrapped
his arms around his back and curled upwards to kiss him, moaning and whimpering
into his mouth. Hiei growled softly and moved faster, his demonic speed and
precision making Yusuke cry out and throw his head back, mouth hanging open as
a constant stream of moans, cries, and Hiei's name fell from it unhindered.
Neither of them were going to last much longer. Hiei shifted his weight to one
side and wrapped a hand around Yusuke's leaking cock. He pumped him in time
with his thrusts and pulled him up slightly, finding where he'd bitten his
shoulder before. He lined his teeth up with the imprint and sank them in a
second time as he used his telepathy on the boy a third time, 'Come for me,
Yusuke.' The human's back arched sharply, his nails digging in to his back
harshly, and he screamed the demon's name as his orgasm ripped through him. The
way he tightened and convulsed around him dragged Hiei's own orgasm from him.
He let go of his shoulder and collapsed on top of him, breathing heavily.
They stayed like that for a long time, relaxed and sated as the cool night
breeze quelled the fire on their skin. Yusuke's heartbeat calmed and soon the
pair's breathing evened out. Hiei was the first to move, lifting himself off of
Yusuke and pulling his softened cock free from his ass. He used the torn
remains of Yusuke's shirt to clean them up before fixing his pants back. He
looked down at Yusuke's form and smirked slightly.
Yusuke opened his eyes and looked up at him with a wide grin. His eyes sparkled
in the moonlight and he folded his arms behind his head, completely at ease.
Such a gorgeous sight. Hiei sat between Yusuke's legs and stroked his thigh
lightly. Yusuke began to laugh softly and it dissolved into full blown laughter
after a minute. Hiei chuckled softly and crawled up his body to kiss his
laughing mouth. It kept getting interrupted by Yusuke's laughter and grins, but
Hiei didn't seem to mind.
After a while, Yusuke dressed, stuffing the remains of his shirt into his
pockets, and they headed back to the hotel after Hiei had collected his shirt
and coat from where he'd previously been training. Yusuke slept in Hiei's bed
that night, curled up against his side and snoring away happily. Hiei watched
him sleep for a while, wondering what had gotten into him to make him want this
human as his own. He'd experienced lust before, but this was different. He was
possessive of Yusuke. It was strange and different, but he supposed it wasn't
entirely a bad thing.
He decided it was just another development in his relationship with Yusuke and
let it be. Hiei shut his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
The next day they woke and joined the others for breakfast. Kurama noticed the
strange bite mark on Yusuke's shoulder peaking out from under his shirt. He
asked Hiei about it. The fire demon looked up at his fox friend and a small,
barely noticeable smirk graced his lips.
"Must've gotten attacked while he was training," He replied, a devilish glint
in his crimson eyes. Understanding lighted in Kurama's own green eyes and he
smiled.
"I see," He replied simply before letting the subject drop. Kuwabara asked
Yusuke the same thing about his bite mark, and the detective gave the same
reply, glancing over at Hiei as he answered his friend. The masked fighter
didn't comment.
The tournament continued on. Yusuke gained Genkai's spirit orb, and then the
worst happened. Toguro killed her. Hiei felt her energy as it faded and felt
the resulting flare in Yusuke's energy. Anger and pain warred, but Hiei didn't
go after him. He waited, knowing that Yusuke would seek him out if he was
needed.
And he did. Yusuke found him sitting at the rocky shore of the island, quietly
mourning the loss of a great fighter. He turned to look at Yusuke and saw the
tear tracks and the bruises. He knew what had happened. He said nothing and
shifted to the side. Yusuke approached and sat down beside him. They simply sat
in comfortable silence as they mourned. It was dawn before either of them moved
to leave.
Things went on. The finals came and went. Yusuke defeated Toguro, and suddenly
Genkai was back. Everything seemed to be going well. But not long after their
return to their normal lives, Sensui appeared with his plot to open a portal to
demon world. Hiei allowed Yusuke, Kurama, and Kuwabara to deal with it. He
wasn't interested in stopping something like that. Plus he had other things to
sort out.
Things like Yusuke. The time he spent away from the boy gave him the time he
needed to think about what was going on with them. They didn't treat each other
any differently, even after what had happened that night at the Dark
Tournament. And there were times when they would seek each other out just to be
together. Those times were some of the few that Hiei found himself feeling at
peace with himself and even his past. It was...comforting, and he liked that.
His relationship with Yusuke didn't need a label. It was beyond that. They
didn't need words to understand each other, even if Yusuke talked his ear off
half the time. The boy's babbling wasn't annoying like it was with others. It
was amusing. Their silences weren't awkward. Instead, they were comfortable.
It was only after he had sorted everything out that he decided to seek Yusuke
out again, only to find him being hounded by some psychic sniper. And so, he
joined the group once more. He was at first annoyed when he, Kurama, and
Kuwabara ended up trapped inside of Itsuki's Yuriatoko. But as the battle
between Yusuke and Sensui continued he grew fearful and desperate. He needed to
get out of there. Yusuke was in danger.
And then the worst happened. Hiei watched helplessly as Yusuke died. Kuwabara
got them out of the Yuriatoko, but it was too late. The boy was dead. Hiei
shook with rage, but he exuded calm. He had skipped past the point of blind
rage, and straight into the calm anger that came from pure hatred. He was going
to kill Sensui even if he died in the process. The bastard had just taken
something from him that he had just started to treasure. He would pay for that
mistake.
But before Hiei could take his revenge, the impossible happened. Yusuke
returned, but he wasn't human anymore. He was a demon. He had the markings of
the Mazoku. Hiei was mesmerized by the sight him, and fought to stay awake
despite having his energy drained. He didn't know if he was really seeing this
or if he was delusional or just plain dead. That would be answered after he
woke up later on.
He was at Yusuke's apartment, laying on the bed. He could hear talking from
another room and got up to investigate. Kurama was cutting Yusuke's long hair
and they were talking idly. Hiei stood in the doorway watching them, his eyes
focused on Yusuke. The demon markings were gone, but his energy was definitely
different, yet still the same somehow. Yusuke was alive, and here, and he'd be
that way for a very, very long time. Hiei would make sure of that.
Yusuke turned when Kurama had finished and smiled at Hiei. The shorter man
stared at him, his crimson eyes narrowing. Kurama stepped away, moving to put
away the scissors and clean up the fallen locks of hair.
"Hey, Hiei. Thought you'd b-AH!" Yusuke's greeting was cut off when Hiei was
suddenly right in front of him, his hand gripping his hair tightly and yanking
his head back. Hiei kissed him hard, confirming to himself that the boy was
alive.
"If you ever do something so stupid again I'll kill you myself," He warned,
letting go of Yusuke's hair. The boy rubbed at his sore scalp and smiled
sheepishly up at him.
"I can't really promise anything..." He admitted honestly. Hiei clicked his
tongue and crossed his arms. That was good enough he supposed. After making
sure that Yusuke was satisfied with the way his hair had been cut and speaking
briefly with Hiei, Kurama decided to head home, leaving the pair of them alone.

The silence that settled between them was thick. Hiei watched him as he
rummaged through the kitchen for food, unwilling to take his eyes off of him.
Yusuke kept glancing at him as he made himself something to eat and brought it
to his room. Hiei followed shutting the door behind him and leaning back
against it. Yusuke paused at the action, but didn't say anything against it.
Instead he sat down at his desk and started to eat.
"...I'm sorry," Yusuke finally said, breaking the quiet atmosphere. "I didn't
know what else to do. I didn't have anything left. But...I'm back now." Hiei
looked him over slowly before his gaze locked with Yusuke's.
"I can see that," He deadpanned, making Yusuke choke on his food. He swallowed
and pushed the empty plate towards the edge of the desk. Hiei watched him
quietly for a bit before speaking again. "So, you're a descendant of the
Mazoku. Even after everything, you still have ways of surprising me." Yusuke
laughed and grinned at Hiei.
"Someone has to keep ya on your toes," Yusuke replied, leaning back in his
chair and folding his arms behind his head. Hiei approached him and took in his
new change of clothes and noted that he smelled like he'd had a shower a couple
of hours ago. The silence that enveloped them this time wasn't as palpable as
before. It was one of their more comfortable ones. A sign that things were
alright. The demon tilted his head slightly and reached out to run his fingers
through Yusuke's freshly cut hair.
"What now?" He asked his thumb tracing the shell of Yusuke's ear lightly as he
continued to idly play with the detective's hair. Yusuke shrugged.
"Back to normal life, I guess," He answered, sounded less than thrilled. Hiei
clicked his tongue and frowned at him.
"That won't satisfy you," He stated plainly. "Not until you know where you came
from and what happened during your fight with Sensui. I know you, Yusuke.
You'll get antsy within a day." Yusuke chuckled softly and leaned into Hiei's
touch.
"Yeah...I know," He said, his eyes slipping shut. "But I guess I can take a bit
of a break before I do that." Hiei hummed quietly in agreement and the silence
resumed. He had a feeling that things were going to get a lot more complicated
very quickly.
And he was right. Demon world came calling to all three of them. Yusuke was
summoned by his ancestor, Kurama by an old friend, and Hiei by an interesting
stranger. They would each answer their summons of course. Yusuke because he
needed to know about what he was, Kurama because of obligations from his past,
and Hiei because of pure curiosity.
When Hiei admitted to Yusuke that he would go to Mukuro's stronghold, the now
former detective had grinned at him and said, "Just don't have too much fun
without me. I'll figure something out." True to his word, a new tournament was
held to find the new ruler of the demon world. None of them had won, but that
was alright. Enki would be a good and fair leader until the next tournament was
held.
Yusuke stayed in demon world for a while longer and Hiei made his decision to
stay indefinitely. They were together often, spending as much time as they
could together it would seem.
"I'll come and visit when I can," Yusuke said. He and Hiei were sitting under a
tree in what used to be Raizen's territory. Yusuke had slouched down in order
to rest his head against Hiei's shoulder.
"I know. And I will do the same when my job allows," Hiei replied, his eyes
closed. They were both a little sad at their parting, but knew it would only be
temporary. Hiei had become close friends with Mukuro in his time here and the
two of them understood each other a great deal. They both had far too much pain
in their pasts, but were now free from it.
"Are you gonna compete in the next tournament when it comes up?" Yusuke asked.
Hiei chuckled, a smirk adorning his features.
"Do you really have to ask?" He countered. Yusuke laughed and shook his head.
"I'll take that as a yes," He replied, lifting his head and stretching his arms
above his head. "...I should get going." Hiei nodded and they stood. "Well...I
guess this is goodbye." Hiei smirked and shook his head.
"Go. Live your human life," He said, his tone a lot softer than Yusuke had ever
head it before. "And when that has ended come back here and fight against me in
the tournament." Yusuke grinned and laughed, yanking Hiei into a tight hug.
"Definitely," He said as Hiei wrapped his arms around him to return the
embrace. "And when I do fight you in the tournament, you'll know I'll be here
to stay." Yusuke pulled back and looked down at him. Their eyes met and Hiei
smirked.
'You're mine, Yusuke Urameshi,' The fire demon's voice echoed softly in
Yusuke's mind making his skin go warm and his brain to go a fuzzy. He took a
shuddered breath and leaned down to kiss him.
"Damn right," He replied softly once they parted.
When Yusuke left demon world to return to his human life and friends the two of
them barely saw each other. Hiei was busy with his patrols and Yusuke was
trying to catch up in school. When they did see each other, however, it was
like no time had passed. They trained and sparred, and sometimes things
devolved and they would end up in the dirt or on the floor or in a bed
depending on where they were. Other times there was simply companionship.
Drinks were often shared and stories swapped about what had been going on
lately.
When Genkai passed away for good, there were many people at her funeral. Tears
were shed and stories were passed around. But when it was all over, Yusuke
disappeared into her house and Hiei followed. As before their mourning was
quiet, but Yusuke was at peace with it, knowing that the old hag had died a
painless death. And as Botan had predicted, she had nearly outlasted them all.
After the funeral and Genkai had been laid to rest, her estate was made into a
half-way point for demons and humans, just as she had requested. Jin, Toya,
Chu, Rinku, Suzuka, and Shishiwakamaru were the first ones to take advantage.
They visited the human world often, and everything seemed to be going smoothly.
As the years passed, humans and demons began to coexist. It wasn't always
peaceful, but that was to be expected.
Kurama's mother passed not long after Genkai, and he seemed lost for quite
sometime. However, with his step-brother and friends beside him, he pulled
through. It wasn't long before his step-father followed his wife into the
afterlife. Many years later, it was time to say good-bye to Kuwabara.
That death tore Yusuke apart. He was his best friend, practically his brother.
He had clung to Hiei in the privacy of his house as he sobbed after the
funeral. He fell asleep crying and still clinging to the smaller demon. Hiei
didn't mind. He was pained by Kuwabara's passing as well. The man may have been
an idiot, but he had been an honorable idiot and he had treated Yukina like a
queen. Hiei's sister had even married him, and they'd had children together,
despite their different life spans.
The morning after Kuwabara's funeral, Keiko came over. When she unlocked the
door to Yusuke's house Hiei instantly awoke, alarmed at the sudden intrusion.
But once he recognized who it was, he relaxed. Keiko had grown old, but she was
still strong. She smiled at him and greeted him warmly, asking about how things
had been going and if Yusuke was alright. He told her all the latest news from
demon world and that the Mazoku was asleep at the moment. As they talked she
made breakfast, somehow roping him into helping her without much difficulty.
Perhaps he was going soft, but he couldn't bring himself to care about that.
Things had changed. He had changed. There were people he cared about, and even
loved. He was no longer the hateful demon he had been all those years ago when
he'd kidnapped Keiko and fought Yusuke. His past no longer plagued him. He was
at peace.
Half a decade after Kuwabara's passing, Keiko went peacefully in her sleep. She
was the last person tying Yusuke to the human world. Again, the Mazoku had
cried, and again he had clung to Hiei when the other had returned to attend the
funeral.
It was almost strange to think that if Yusuke hadn't died a second time years
ago, Hiei might have had to watch the strong willed detective wither into a
husk of what he'd once been and fade away. The thought disturbed him and he
held Yusuke even closer as the man cried.
It wasn't until nearly two decades had passed that Yusuke returned to the demon
world for good. He didn't meet Hiei right away, instead he went straight into
training. He gathered strength quickly, never having really given up his job or
lifestyle. True to his word, he met Hiei in the ring at the tournament. Their
fight was long and glorious. They spoke without words and laughed as though no
time had passed. They pushed the limits, eager to see the strength of the
other, exhilarated to feel the other's focus fully on them in years.
Just has it had been all those years ago in the forests of Hanging Neck Island,
there was nothing in all the worlds except them. The fight ended in a draw as
they both collapsed from exhaustion after hours of fighting. They looked at
each other, giggling madly from exertion. Maybe next time there would be a
winner between them. But for now, they were dropped from the running and taken
to the hospital wing for their wounds.
Someone new won the tournament and added to the laws already in place, but
abided by the ones left by the previous rulers. In three years the tournament
would begin again and someone else would take the throne. Until then, Yusuke
joined Hiei in his patrols, and they fought and trained together, their bond
growing stronger as the years passed. Words didn't mean much between them. It
was more what those around them couldn't hear that mattered.
The Mazoku markings eventually remained on Yusuke's skin permanently, but he
kept his hair short in remembrance of his human heritage. He even learned how
to hold full conversations with Hiei through telepathy as their minds grew
linked from how many times the fire demon spoke to him through it.
"I'm glad you stole those artifacts from Koenma," Yusuke said one day as they
were lounging in their shared room. Hiei turned to look at him from his perch
on the windowsill. Yusuke was smiling softly at him, his eyes sparkling. "If
you hadn't then none of this would've been possible." Hiei chuckled and smirked
slightly.
"You're a fool," He responded, turning back to the view outside their window.
'But you're right. I suppose my greed has earned me many thing.'
'Including me?' Yusuke asked, his voice resounding though Hiei's mind, the
cheeky grin evident from his tone. He chuckled softly and looked back at the
other demon, his crimson eyes locking on dark brown ones.
'Precisely.'
